How to Make a Large Drywall Repair

In this particular case, our customer had a leak in the upstairs dormer window. The water damaged the drywall and it needed to be replaced. We cut out the damaged drywall to the studs, then measured the hole and cut a piece of drywall that would fit.

When then nailed and screwed the new drywall to the beams and used mesh tape over the gaps. Next, we applied three coats of joint compound over all the screw heads and down the seams. Finally was sanded the joint compound until it was smooth.

Time For Paint!

When the drywall repair was complete we then used a primer on the repaired spot, after we painted one coat on just the repair. To ensure the repair would blend in with the rest of the ceiling we painted the entire ceiling over again with the same color paint.

As you can see below, it’s as if the hole was never there.
