Choosing colors for painting your home can be a challenging ordeal. There are literally 1,000’s of colors to choose from, how do you choose?

Don’t be afraid to paint with dark and bold colors

When choosing colors to paint with go with your instinct. If you like dark and bold colors don’t be afraid, go for it.

If you have a neat architectural design take advantage of it

Having chair rails in a room gives you the perfect opportunity to do something different. Choosing a painting the bottom and the top different colors is a great way to make a space pop. There’s no right or wrong when choosing which color does where. Some like the darker paint on top and some like it on below the chair rail. Personally, I prefer to have a darker paint color on the bottom and a lighter on top.

Fun With Painting Your Ceilings

Ceilings don’t have to be painted white. Choose a color that complements the walls, it’ll help tie the space together. Recently we have been painting a lot of ceilings black, it sounds weird at first but the results have been amazing.

What Color Should I Paint My Trim?

Trim work should be painted a color that looks good with the wall paint. In the 90’s and the early 2000’s everyone was painting their trim stark white, now the trend has shifted to using off-whites. I like to choose a neutral off-white paint and use it throughout the entire house. Changing trim colors in each room is acceptable but it makes touching up more complicated and you’ll have color break points at the entrance of each room.

Just In Case

If you’ve narrowed the paint colors down to a few chooses but you just can’t pull the trigger, there’s hope for you yet. Luckily Sherwin Williams sells sample paints. They come in quart sized can and cost around $5.00 a piece, buy a couple and a mini roller and start putting the colors on the walls. Make sure you do a couple areas in the same room, lighting differences may change how the colors look
